As faculty and staff, you may come into contact with students who are struggling and/or in need of extra assistance. There are many reasons why students may be struggling or in distress, including relationship difficulties, stress, physical or mental health issues, academic challenges, or financial problems. Students may provide a number of signs that they are having difficulty. Being aware of these signals, as well as resources to help, plays an important role in supporting student success at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

We have designed several resources, materials, presentations, and trainings, specifically for faculty and instructors.

Kognito At-Risk Suicide Prevention Training

The Counseling Center hopes that each faculty and staff member and each student will participate in the Kognito At-Risk training, which will help you to better identify, support, and connect distressed students with campus services. This has the feel of a video game as you make choices about what to say and do in conversations with students who may be distressed. The training takes just 30-40 minutes to complete. There are also specific modules for reaching out to students who are military veterans and those who identify as transgender.

The Trauma Response Team at the Counseling Center provides a range of easily accessible and professional services to students, faculty, and staff members who are affected by traumatic incidents and/or psychological emergencies.

  1. The team’s primary purpose is to provide prompt response to students, faculty, and staff of the university community who are involved in or directly affected by incidents that are of a traumatic or emergency nature. These responses are primarily to address the emotional and psychological needs of those involved.
  2. The team provides preventive services and information to members of the university community who request it. The team also provides aftercare service for those individuals and groups who are affected by a traumatic incident and would benefit from such services provided by the team.
  3. The team works in collaboration with the Office of the Emergency Dean  and other campus agencies and individuals who are involved in a critical incident. The group serves as a part of the information system with others involved in order to maximize the exchange of information and the availability of services without violating the confidentiality of students involved.

Illinois Human Resources is dedicated to enhancing the university community by attracting, retaining, and supporting a quality workforce.
