Policies

Students, Faculty and Staff

When someone is in danger, students are expected to take immediate action (by calling 9-1-1, for example) to provide or secure assistance. The university and surrounding community public safety officials support students who take steps to ensure others’ safety by reducing the fear of legal or disciplinary consequences for those in need of assistance and for themselves.

Students and employees may designate a preferred first name, which certain University systems will then use. The University will also retain the full legal name, which is used when required by the University, such as in tax documents, contracts, academic transcripts, diplomas, and certain health records.

The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is committed to creating an equitable and inclusive environment and recognizes individuals with disabilities as a valued component of diversity and of our campus community.

The purpose of this policy is to ensure that individuals with disabilities who require the use of Service or Emotional Support (Assistance) Animals have equal access to university programs, housing, and public spaces in accordance with law.

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is committed to providing a safe and welcoming campus environment free from discrimination based on sex, which includes sexual assault, sexual exploitation, stalking, sexual harassment, dating violence, and domestic violence (collectively referred to as sexual misconduct).

Students

Graduate students in degree-seeking programs are entitled to two types of Academic Leave of Absence (Personal Academic Leaves of Absence and Academic Progress Leaves of Absence).

Medical withdrawal is voluntary and the decision to pursue a medical withdrawal is at the sole discretion of the student. Students approved for medical withdrawal will likely have conditions to meet before they are able to return and may be required to sit out for a period of time.

The medical policies in the Student Code apply to all undergraduate, graduate, and professional students enrolled at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
